Internet Trends of 2015



As New Years approaches, it’s time to reflect on the great and maybe not so awesome memories of 2015. From wild dance trends to impactful music, this year was full of surprises. Continue reading to remember some of the top internet trends in 2015 that you may or may not have enjoyed as much as your peers.

1. Jurassic World

Starring and Chris Pratt and Bruce Dallas Howard, Universal Picture’s 4th movie in the Jurassic Park series was the number one film in 2015. The action and adventure movie was filmed on the original site of Jurassic Park. This year’s most popular Sci-Fi produced over $1.6 billion in box office sales. In the film, when the newest attraction escapes, the park breaks out into chaos and self-destructs as the staff attempts to handle the rogue dinosaur. Highlighting consumer and corporate excess, the dinosaur was a symbol for society’s worst aspects. If you were a fan of this phenomenal production, be sure to look out for the sequel, which is scheduled to be released on June 22, 2018.

2. “Uptown Funk”

As this year’s most played song, the catchy tune, “Uptown Funk,” is still ringing in the ears of many people. The single was recorded by and vocals are sung by Mark Ronson and vocals are sung by Bruno Mars. It was released in November 2014, but only recently became popular. The song went on to receive 15.5 million streams in one week. In 2015, the single received numerous awards, including the Brit Award for Single of the Year and MTV’s Best Male Video. On September 15, 2015, the song’s music video became the ninth YouTube video to receive over 1 billion views. The inspiration for the style comes from music by Prince and Morris Day.

3. Starbucks Secret Menu

As students at Saint Ursula Academy, we are familiar with Starbucks coffee. However, not everyone knows about the secret menu this coffee shop provides. Offering their classic coffees and teas, the restaurant also serves variations to many of their drinks. For an added twist on your typical morning Starbucks run, try the Vanilla Pumpkin Nut Latte or the Peppermint Bark Frappuccino. This secret menu, which isn’t so secret anymore, rose to fame through social media apps such as Instagram and Snapchat. The special drink orders are simple alterations to drinks Starbucks already advertises on their original menu. Next time you stop by Starbucks, try a new version of your typical order. 4. Snapchat Geofilters

This popular social media app released many updates in 2015, which rapidly increased its popularity. Snapchat now offers geographical filters for your pictures called Geofilters. These filters are either sponsored by major companies or are designed and submitted by anyone. As you move to new locations, you can access different overlays. 5. “See You Again”

Recorded by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth, “See You Again” was written for the movie in 2015 to honor Paul Walker, who died in an automobile accident. The song was released on March 17, 2015 and became each artist’s biggest success in the music industry. The song set the record for the most streams in one day on Spotify on April 13, 2015. Although this single was not the most popular song in 2015, the music video is the most watched YouTube video of 2015 and the fourth most viewed video of all time. The video earned 1 billion views in 185 days and continues to gain views.
